Bulwarks Against Tyranny

 BULWARKS AGAINST
TYRANNY.
___
 West Cumberland Coroner
on Juries.
  "Juries were instituted about the time of Edward I. They were then meant as bulwarks against the Government Executive's attempts to interfere with the rights of Englishmen, and ever since then have stood out against such tyranny and injustice. Though we may not have the troubles in the future that there have been in the past, you never know when the Executive may interfere again,  and it would never do for juries to be doen away with. I hope you will never vote for their abolition."
     Thus did Col. MASON, the Coroner for West Cumberland, address the jury at an inquest near Cockermouth on Wednesday. There was a movement amongst certain lawyers, Col. MASON added, to do away with juries.
     He was sorry some of the jurymen had had to come a long distance to that inquest, but it was still necessary to have a jury in certain cases. Though they may not think so, it was a privilege to be a juryman. Before the war it was necessary that there should be a jury at every inquest. A change was made after the war, and a Coroner could exercise his own discretion. To a certain extent a Coroner could still use his discretion, but the Coroner's Act laid down that there must be a jury when the death followed an accident in a mine, an accident in a factory or was due to the use of a vehicle on the highway.
     Another change was the reduction in the number of jurymen, which used to be twelve, and now was seven. Also, the jurymen were not now compelled to view the body, though the Coroner could direct them to do so if he wished, and they had a right to see the body.

 BLENCATHRA HUNT
_____
      The Blencathra Hunt, which were staying with Mr. THOMPSON, West Head, cast off on Friday morning at Harrop Planting. A drag was taken in the wood, and Melody put a fox off at Sweden Crag. It went out through the wire fence by the city Fell to Launchy Ghyll, turned in at Tottling Stone and under Bough Crag, went forward to Bull Crags, through the City Intacks, back into Harrop Planting, and here Melody was joined by five couples of hounds.
     The fox took them through to Dob Ghyll, where it was viewed by Mrs. HURST and Miss. LANCASTER, who gave it a glad "tally ho." Awat it went under Birk Crag, above West Head Farm, up the Rough Intack, out by Stone Man, through the Nab Crags, where he was halloed by some followers of the Ullswater Pack, who now joined in the hunt.
     The fox turned in crossing the beck above the Stepping Stones, and by this time was feeling the effect of his long run as he turned in by Little Side Intack, under Bracken Horse, through the  front of Helm Crag on to Raven Crag, where he was accounted for by the Blencathra and the Ullswater Foxhounds before a large number of followers.

Aut Vincere Aut Mori

AUT VINCERE AUT MORI

(VICTORY OR DEATH)

The years roll on, but mem'ry clings,
Of those who died for greater things;
Out there beneath a foreign sky,
The sweetest of our manhood lie.

"Your country needs you!" was the call,
And off they went, to live or fall;
No laggard step or faltering heart,
As each went nobly to his part.

Sleep on! You who the dangers braved,
And Homeland from tyrant saved;
You're in our hearts and mem'ry yet,
We loved you then, we don't forget.

R. K., Cockermouth.

Uncle Pen-My Favourite Songs II

 UNCLE PEN'S
ESSAY CONTEST
_____
 MY FAVOURITE SONGS
  My Favourite Songs:
     There are different kinds of songs and they each have a different tune. Songs are really musical compositions accompanied by words.
     Some of the various kinds include, classical, sentimental, comic, jazz, hunting and folk songs. My favourite sentimental songs are "Old folks at home," "Home Sweet Home," and "Annie Laurie."  Of hunting songs I like "John Peel."
     Among the songs we learn at school "The Mermaid," a shanty at sea, is very pleasing and of the comic songs I prefer "Old King Cole to all the others. It was sung on Crab Sports Day at Egremont, when the listeners were highly amused.
     I do not care much for classical singing and jazz because they have too much swing and have extremely high notes.
     My two favourite songs are "When it's Spring Time in the Rockies," and "Trade Winds." These are exceptionally nice because the words rhyme, and they both have sweet tunes, the notes being neither too high nor too low.
