Horticultural Society
~~~~~~~
The ninth annual show of this society was held yesterday (Friday) in the
schoolroom, kindly lent by the President (Mr T H Rymer).
Visitors to the show were also allowed the opportunity of visiting the
grounds at Calder Abbey and Ponsonby Hall. The Committee consisted of Rev
H. M Fairlie, (chairman) Messrs Satterthwaite, J Stewart, F Hacker, W Benn,
I Tyson, A. L. Buchannan, W Trippiear, J Geldart, W Geldart, W Tyson,
(Sellafield) James Atkinson, (treasurer) and Henry Sandwith (hon. sec).
At the opening ceremony there was a nice company present. The Rev H. M.
Fairlie in a neat speech, introduced Mrs Rymer and spoke of the usefulness
of these flower shows.
Mrs Rymer having opened the show, Mr Walker proposed and Capt Coalbank
seconded a vote of thanks to her.
The judges were Mr M Clarke, gardener, Hazelholme, for the horticultural
section; Mrs Robinson, Blackbeck, butter, eggs and cakes; Mr Irving, of Wath
Brow, the tarmers' class; Miss Bewley, the sewing classes, and Mrs
Williams, Mrs Haselfoot, and Miss Wybergh, essays and wild flowers. The
entries were not equal to last year. The quality of the exhibits was much
better than was expected this season.
After the judging the committee and judges had luncheon at the "Golden
Fleece" Mr Henry Walker presided. The usual loyal toasts were duly honoured
and that of " Success to the Society " was proposed by Mr Walker, and
responded to by Rev H. M. Fairlie, who said when they could have such a good
exhibition in one of the worst seasons known, there need be no fear of the
future success of the society, of the members would continue to work with
enthusiasm.
