Page 1 of 3 UNCLE SAM'S EXCELSIOR BAND. "IF CALLED UPON TO MAKE MY OWN LIVING WHAT WOULD I DO AND WHERE WOULD I GO?" ****** PRIZE WINNER: Dear Uncle Sam, - If I was called upon to make my own living I would go to serve my time to be a plumber at Liverpool, because you have more chance of earning in a big town, than in a small one, and they know more than they do in a little town. A plumber is a very nice business, and you get good wages when you have served your time. I remain your affectionate nephew, George D. MIERS, Main-street, Hensingham. ****** COMMENDED. Dear Uncle Sam, - After I have left the school I will have to make my own living. I would like to go and serve my time to be a dressmaker, because it is very needful for some girls to be dressmakers. Then a dressmaker in the family is a great saving. I would like to go to Whitehaven to do this. - From your loving niece, Sarah DOWNIE, Hensingham. ****** Dear Uncle Sam, - If called to make my own living I would go to Seascale, and I would keep a house and have lodgers. - I remain your loving niece, Jane A. STEWART, Moss Side, Calderbridge. ****** Dear Uncle Sam, - If I was called upon to make a living I would go to Eskdale to be a dressmaker. I am sure everybody would be willing to work for their own living. - I remain your loving niece, Barbara TROUGHTON, Town End, Posonby ****** Dear Uncle Sam, - If I was called upon to make my own living, I would go into some large town to be a barmaid, and then I would have glasses to wash and measures to clean. - I remain your affectionate niece, Sarah HAIL, Stanley Arms, Posonby. ****** Dear Uncle Sam, - If I had to get my own living I would be a farm servant first, and after that I would be a butcher. I would have to kill sheep, cows and pigs, and cut them up and then I would go round with the butcher cart and sell the meat. - Your affectionate nephew, Robert Brew BEATTIE, Wasdale Head ****** |
