RECOGNITION SERVICES AT THE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH. Services for the public recognition of the Rev. A. O. LOCHORE, as minister of the Congregational Church, were held on Sunday and Monday. The Rev. J. H. LOCHORE (the pastor's father) had been expected to preach on Sunday, but, owing to indisposition, he could not attend, and the Rev. J. M. HODGSON, D. D., of Edinburgh, preached to large congregations. A well attended meeting was held on Monday evening, when the Rev. W. A. WRIGLEY, of Keswick, presided, and there were also on the platform: The Revs: A. O. LOCHORE G. F. ALEXANDER (Cowes, I. W.) C. BURROWS (Workington) C. SWANELL J. JENKINS A. UREN (Whitehaven) J. W. DICKSON (Parton) W. SPARKS (Cleator Moor) and Messrs.: C. VARTY (Workington) H. WILLIAMS (Newport) J. PEARSON J. THOMPSON Greetings were received from the Rev. Mr. GALBRAITH (a former pastor of the church) and the Rev. A. NAIRN. The rev. M. YOUNG (Whitehaven) and Mr. BROWN (Newport) also sent their best wishes and congratulations. Mr. THOMPSON then referred to the facts that had led up to the change of the ministry, and said that for a number of months after Mr. NAIRNS retirement the church was resting as it were upon it's oars, and at the close of the year they realised what a grave and serious business the appointment of a pastor was. Now after having had Mr. LOCHORE for a month, they considered they had made a wise selection, and he was sure he could utter no better wish concerning Mr. LOCHORE than that it might be characterised by greater growth on the part of many young lives in the spiritual Kingdom of Christ. Mr. WILLIAMS (Newport) said the Whitehaven Church had got the right man for looking after young people. Addresses were also given by the chairman, Rev. C. SWANELL, and the Rev. A. O. LOCHORE gave thanks for the cordial reception he had been accorded. ****** |
