Page 1 of 10 LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS ITEMS. ****** Mr. CATTLE, of Lancaster, was in town on Tuesday. ****** Monday next will be Whit-Monday, a Bank holiday. ****** John IVISON, the famous Cumberland wrestler, died at Carlisle on Sunday morning. ****** In 1765 the Whitehaven mines were estimated to be worth £15,000 per annum. ****** It is stated that the wheat crop in Manitoba will this year be double of that in 1887. ****** Workington Association Football Club have decided to seek admission into the Northern League. ****** The new postal rates for letters and parcels will come into operation on Jubilee Day, June 22nd. ****** The trees, shrubs, and grass, in front of the Whitehaven Castle, are most refreshing to view at present. ****** A portrait and short account of the life of Lord LONSDALE appear in "Cassell's Magazine" for this month. ****** Mr. FEWKES is still in London, where he has gone for medical advice, owing to a recent cycling accident. ****** At Preston on Friday, T. BIRCHALL was sentenced to six months hard labour for extensive jewel robberies on the railway. ****** Mr. J. JONES, manager of the Preston Street Goods Station, was last week presented with a handsome marble clock and purse of gold subscribed for by his Millom friends. ****** The Ellan Vannin arrived at this port from Douglas on Monday bringing 27, horses, 1 pony, 1 donkey, 46 cattle, and a general cargo. ****** The local militia regiments assembled at Carlisle on Monday, and afterwards left by special train for Brackenber Moor, the training ground. ****** |
