The International Chess Match, between a team of the house of Commons,
and the American House of Representatives, has ended in a draw.


******

The Lee-Metford will be substituted for the Martini-Henry Rifle, and
the military breech-loading class done away with, at the forthcoming
Bisley meeting.

The Bishop of Carlisle, on Tuesday took the oath and subscribed to the
roll of the house of Lords, being introduced by the Bishops of Ripon
and St. Asaph.

The thirteenth anniversary of the Sailors' Rest, will be celebrated in
the Market Hall, on Sunday. A service of song "Elijah" will be given in
the afternoon and evening.

P. C. NICHOL, Workington was publicly presented with a certificate and
cash, from the National Society for the Protection of Life from Fire.
The Mayor of Workington made the presentation.

The murder cases from Whitehaven are expected to be tried at Carlisle,
on Monday, July 2nd. The Counsel for the Crown against the prisoner
FLEMING are Mr. A. HENRY and Mr. McKEEVER.

It is stated that, in consequence of the refusal of the quarrymen to
accept the latest proposal, Lord PENTHYN has decided that the men shall
not be afforded another opportunity of appealing to him as their
employer.

Mr. Crowther MORTON died at Netherwasdale on Friday last. The remains
were interred at Strands Churchyard, yesterday, and the funeral was
attended by a large number of freemasons, of which body the deceased
had long been a member.

Whitsuntide excursions by the Furness Railway are announced for
Saturday, when the 8-15 train from Corkickle will run to Barrow, and
join on with special trains for London, Birmingham, Nottingham, Darby,
Leicester, Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, Liverpool and Manchester.
