LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS ITEMS.

A violent thunderstorm prevailed over many parts of England, on
Tuesday, and did a lot of harm to the crops. In the evening of that day
the darkness portended a violent storm down Furness way, but it
expended itself on the seashore, doing no damage whatever.

The following pupil teachers were amongst the "first class" in the
report of the examiners in connection with the diocesan examination in
religious knowledge:

Catherine STEELE, Drigg (£5 prize)

Mary A. NICHOLSON, Drigg

Jessie METCALF

Mabel ROBINSON, St. Nicholas.

Mr. Rowland HILL, of 24, Northumberland-street, Workington, has been
appointed by the Income Tax Commissioners, collector, in the place of
the late Mr. James DICKINSON. The applications were numerous, and much
canvassing made use of, the situation being considered a good one.

The monthly meeting of Hensingham Parish Council was held on Monday
evening. There were present:

It was agreed that the chairman would sign the County Council address
to the Queen, and the clerk was instructed to write to the County
Council, and request them to give therir earliest attention to the
making of a suitable footpath from Frizington-road end to the bridge at
the low end of Keekle-terrace.
