NIXON, has been appointed secretary of the Lonsdale Ironworks, a position he held under the late company, of which Mr. BAIRD was manager. ****** The Yeomanry Cavalry inspection and review will be held at Penrith today. Tomorrow (Friday), the various troops are expected to return to their respective headquarters. ****** In the House of Commons on Monday, Mr. BRODRICK said that in all the prisons there was, under stringent restrictions, provision for corporal punishment for certain offenses. ****** "The Comet," is the name of a gratis paper started last month in Kimberley, South Africa. It is published by Mr. J. P. M'NALLY and printed by Mr. J. C. LOONEY, lately of Frizington. ****** Penrith has raised already nearly £2,000 by voluntary subscriptions, towards the Cottage Hospital Commemoration scheme. Mr. J. R. MUSGRAVE suggested something of the kind for Whitehaven, but it has not been taken up. ****** The two scarlet geraniums in front of the Coach-road Catholic Church, have a pleasing effect, something of the sort outside St. Nicholas Church would look prettier, than the weeds that are so conspicuous at present. ****** The Mayor's Diamond Jubilee Committee are going to entertain the old folk to a cold dinner in the Granary Yard on June 22nd. A hot dinner was found to be too impracticable for the large number expected. Beer or ale will be allowed to those who wish for it. ****** A young sailor, who probably attended service only a few times since he went on his last voyage over two years ago, was so impressed with Madame WILLIAM's singing at the Market-place Church on Sunday, that he had a difficulty in repressing applause. ****** |
