Page 2 of 10 LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS ITEMS. ****** Mr. CRAGG, of Corkickle Gardens, had a quantity of home-grown gooseberries at his stall in the market on Thursday, and sold them at 1s a quart. ****** It has been decided to paint some of the London and Northwestern locomotives, red, white, and blue, this season, in connection with the Jubilee celebrations. ****** There was an extra large congregation at the Presbyterian Church on Sunday evening, when Madame Katie WILLIAMS (gold medalist, R. A. M.) sang a solo, "Dreams of Paradise." ****** The Right Rev. J. GRISDALE, a Canadian Bishop, was initiated an oddfellow at Bolton, on Saturday. He is the first bishop that has been made a member of the Manchester Unity. ****** The trip to the Isle of Man on Monday is being looked forward to with pleasure. The "Cumbria" is being specially prepared for the excursion, which for years past, has been most popular. This is the first sea trip of the season. ****** Mr. DUMBELL, Clerk of the Rolls, Isle of Man, accompanied by his niece, Miss. DUMBELL, arrived in Whitehaven on Monday by the Manx Steamer. They were met by Col. ATKINSON, who was their guest at luncheon at the Grand Hotel that afternoon. ****** At a concert at Penrith on Saturday evening, in connection with the Yeomanry, the chairman (Quartermaster SMITH) complimented the troop that came from Whitehaven, which, as it was at present he said, could not help being a credit to any regiment. ****** |
