Local Intelligence



       The Earl of LONSDALE has recently contributed the handsome sum of £
100 towards the re-erection of Cockermouth Church.

       Mr. LOWES of Scotch-street, in this town , was on Wednesday elected
Secretary of the Whitehaven Savings Bank, in room of the late Mr. Issac HAYTON.

       The Rev. J. WOODS, from Belfast, has for several Sabbaths past
occupied the pulpit in the Presbyterian Church, in this town, in the absence of the
respected pastor of the place, the Rev. Joseph BURNS. Mr. BURNS is expected to
resume his ministerial duties here on Sabbath, the 8th of August.

       Early Harvest.- On Thursday last, Mr. Wm. HODGSON, of Hysemoor Side,
near Bootle, commenced cutting a field of fine barley, of description known by
the name of Black Barley. This is the first instance of the kind that we have
heard of  in this country this summer.

       The Commissions of Assize will be opened at Carlisle on Monday, the
2nd of August, before the Rt. Hon. John Lord CAMPBELL, chief justice, and Sir
William WIGHTMAN.

       Sir John SHELLEY, accompanied by a party of ladies and gentlemen, on a
marine pleasure trip, put into this port in the early part of last week, in
the Hon. BARONET's splendid yacht, Ginefra. The party remained until Saturday,
on which day they took  their departure for the north, with the intention of
proceeding through the Caledonian Canal.

       The Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Cockermouth, has been registered as a
place for solemnizing marriages.
