WORKINGTON ATHLETIC SPORTS COMPANY ___ APPLICATION FOR OCCASIONAL LICENSE. ___ At the Workington Police Court, on Wednesday, before his Worship the Mayor (Ald. R. E. HIGHTON), J. H. HOWE, and F. HALL, Esqs., Mr. F. W. LIVESEY, managing director of the Workington Brewery Co., Ltd., applied for license to sell intoxicating liquors at the Lonsdale Park, Workington, on the occasion of the annual sports of the Workington Athletic Sports Committee, which will be held on Saturday the 23rd inst., between 10 a.m. and eight o’clock in the evening. He begged to remind their Worships that it had been customary for several years to grant a license for the sports, which he submitted, was necessary in view of the large number of people who attended them. In his opinion it was better that refreshments should be supplied on the ground than that confusion should be caused by people passing to and from the grounds whilst the sports were proceeding to get what they required elsewhere. He would not make the application if there was any licensed victualler in the town who wished to have the license. Several had been invited to make the applications, but none had done so. He proposed himself personally to supervise all the arrangements, and the actual work will be carried out by Mr. G. B. COLLINS, their brewer, and their staff. He, (the speaker) had no pecuniary interest in the matter, and he might say that the profits would be divided between those who did the work. The Superintendent said that on the last occasion the time was from 2 o’clock to 7.30. Mr. LIVESEY, no doubt, had good reasons for changing the hours. Mr. LIVESEY: I don’t want to cut it too fine, but I am willing to leave the hours to the bench. The application was granted. |
