THE KING AND MEDALS FOR BRAVERY. ____ A LOCAL RECIPIENT. The King received at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday morning a number of men who had been recommended for the Albert and Edward Medals in recognition of gallantry in saving or endeavouring to save life. The men assembled at the Home Office, and were conducted to the Palace by one of the officials of the department. The King personally pinned on the medal to the breast of each recipient and shook hands heartily with each in turn. Among the decorated were Mr. George FISHER and Mr. Harry HULLEY, Edward Medal of the first class, and Mr. John Edwin CHAMBERS, Mr. Walter Henry PRINCE, Mr. Herbert WILLIAMSON and Mr. William Charles WINCH, Edward Medal of the second class, for gallantry after the explosions in the Cadeby Main Colliery, near Doncaster, in July 1912. Mr. Thomas CHATTERTON and Mr. Albert SCHOFIELD, Edward Medal of the second class, who on January 28th, this year endeavoured at great risk to save two other men from noxious gases in some old workings at the lodge Mill Colliery, Lepton, Huddersfield. Mr. John CAIRNS, Edward Medal of the second class, who on the 13th March, after an inrush of water from old workings at the Townhead Iron Ore Mine, Egremont, Cumberland, went back to warn another man and was imprisoned with him in a drift for five and a half days. |
