ST. NICHOLAS CHURCH AND
CHURCHYARD.
_____

The Town Clerk said that the Vicar of St. Nicholas’ called on him about a fortnight ago and asked permission of the Council to place the coat-of-arms of the town as an ornament on the front roof of the church.

Councillor PALMER moved that the request be granted, and this was at once seconded and agreed to.

Ald. MUSGRAVE recalled the fact that some years ago in the time of the late Vicar it was proposed to lay out the churchyard and improve the condition of it, laying it out in flower beds and planting some shrubs. Ald. WALKER’s father at the time very generously offered to do all that was required himself. That offer was not accepted.

The place was a disgrace to the town of Whitehaven, - grown all over with dandelions, and a happy hunting ground for cats, dogs and small children. He did not know what strangers coming into the town would think. The Town Clerk might ascertain how far the Vicar would be prepared to meet the Corporation in the matter.

The Town Clerk said the Vicar did mention the matter of the Churchyard. He did not see his way with regard to that, at the present moment, but it was occupying his mind. If he knew that the Council could give him pecuniary assistance, that would probably induce him to take steps much sooner than he would otherwise be able to do.
