NARROW ESCAPE FROM DROWNING AT PARTON. _____ On Saturday afternoon a number of boys went onto the Parton Beach to a place known as Peggy Bend to bathe and after being in the water some time one of their number, Wm. ANDERSON, nine years of age, son of Wm. ANDERSON, jun., became exhausted, and before his companions realised the situation and reached him, he was nearly drowned. The other boys, James JACKSON, Daniel CHESTER, and John MARTIN were able to clutch hold of him in the nick of time and draw him out to the beach. A boy named Ashley SHERWEN ran to the Beach House for assistance, and Mr. McGLASSON and Mr. David CHESTER hurried to the place, and at once used artificial respiration which fortunately proved successful in bringing him back to consciousness. The boy was conveyed to his home, which was not far away, and was soon all right. His parents were in a terrible state of mind for a time, until he had been brought round. The boy, it seems, like many others who have learned to swim a few strokes, had miscalculated his powers and exceeded the distance out from the beach, from which he could safely return, and thus failed in his attempt to reach the shore. All credit is due to the plucky little fellows who rescued him, also Mr. McGLASSON and Mr. CHESTER for their timely assistance. |
