M. AND C. LOCOMOTIVE SHOP MEN ____ AN ADVANCE WANTED. ____ An application for improved conditions of labour by the men employed in the locomotive sheds of the M. And C. Railway have been drawn up and will, in due course, be presented to the directors. The application is from all the trades employed in the shops, fitters, blacksmiths, joiners, painters, strikers and labourers, and is for an advance from 2s to 3s per week, per man, and in some cases more, with a twelve o’clock stoppage on Saturdays. The men also ask that they shall not be put on short time when the running staff are on full time. Their contention is that the locomotive shops staff have been put on and kept on short time when the work would have been justified full time, and that for one period they were kept on short time for four years. The locomotive men have recently joined the Nation Union of Railway Men (which was formerly confined to the running staff) and the application, which they have decided to make, is the first result of the Trade Union movement among the men. |
