HUSBAND AND WIFE AT WORKINGTON ____ CHARGE AND COUNTER CHARGE. ____ At Workington Police Court, on Wednesday, Mary DONOUGHEE, married woman, Workington, applied for an order under the Summary Jurisdiction (Married Women) Act, 1895, to be made upon her husband, Hugh DONOUGHEE, fireman, Workington, who had deserted her. Complainant deposed she lived at 90, Senhouse-street. Defendant was her husband. They had been married for twenty-three years, and had eleven children. Five of them were at home. He deserted her a month last Saturday. He came home from work and demanded his clothes. It was her son’s house. He had not since been back. All the money she had from him since was 4s 6d, and she had the children to keep. Her husband was in work, being employed at Derwent Works. The Clerk: What are his weekly wages? Defendant: £1 2s 6d. In reply to her husband, she said she previously put him out at Harrington and Workington for having been drunk and carrying on. Defendant: I offered to go back and she would not let me The Clerk: You see it is not her house. Defendant: She has three and a half crowns since. Complainant: I have had only 4s 6d but I took 2s 6d out of his pocket at my daughter’s house. I want maintenance only for my children. Mrs. PEARS, her daughter, was called by complainant, and said that her mother didn’t put her father out when he last was in the house. Defendant said he was willing to keep his wife if she behaved herself, and also the bairns. The Clerk: Are you willing to provide a house for your wife? Defendant: Yes. To the wife: Are you willing to live with him if he provides a house? Complainant: No, sir. Why not? - Because he drinks and carried on, and we have never any peace in the house. The defendant: You have a bad tongue in your head. No wonder there is no peace. The complainant: No, the other way about. The Bench said they decided to adjourn the case for a month, and in the meantime defendant must provide for his wife and children. |
