HAYMAKER ASSAULTS FARMER. ______ Robert LESTER, farm labourer, Great Broughton, was charged with assaulting Wilson COOKE, farmer, Armaside, Lorton. Defendant did not appear. Complainant said he engaged defendant on Tuesday, the 22nd ult., for haytime at 25s per week, with board and lodgings. After this he increased this by a half a crown. Soon after engaging him defendant came and asked to leave. Witness pointed out that this was contrary to the agreement. Later complainant was in the barn when defendant again came and raised the subject. In the argument which ensued he struck witness a violent blow on the breast, for which he had to be treated by the doctor. George TYSON, servant with the farmer, who was in the barn at the time corroborated. Defendant was ordered to pay £3, including costs, or a month. |
