FAST MOTOR CYCLING
_____

MARYPORT GENTLEMAN FINED.
_____

At the Cockermouth Police Court, on Monday, Robert RITSON, gentleman, Plumbland, Maryport, who did not appear, was charged with driving a motor cycle to the danger of the public, on the 31st ult.

 P. C. HUTCHINSON said that on the morning in question, while on duty, along with P. C. PENDRY, at Bothel, he saw defendant riding a motor bicycle, coming from the direction of Cockermouth and going in the direction of Wigton. He was riding at a speed which was a danger to the public. There were a good many people about at the time, including children. On calculations by P. C. , defendant covered 220 yards in 15 seconds, which worked out to 30 miles an hour.

In reply to Superintendent ILLINGWORTH witness said that BOTHEL was a very dangerous place for fast travelling. It was what might be termed a little bottle-necked place at both ends. He spoke to the defendant, who said his speedometer had gone wrong. He should have been in Wigton in a quarter of an hour, and had been delayed ten minutes then.

 P. C. PENDRY corroborated.

Superintendent ILLINGWORTH handed a letter to the Bench from the defendant, who pleaded guilty, and regretted his absence from the court, owing to a previous engagement.

He was fined £2 including costs.
