The result of the essay competition recently at the Hippodrome, was productive of some very excellent efforts on the parts of the juveniles. Very handsome and beautiful prizes were awarded to the boy and girl who handed in the best essay, giving their impression of the thrilling picture exhibited, entitled, “The Lion Hunters.”

The novel idea was well received, and several very commendable essays were handed in. The prizes were awarded to Miss. Mary JACKSON, Cleator Moor, who received the beautiful ladies satchel, and Master James BRADLEY, Mill-street, Cleator, who was presented with a writing case.

Both from an instructive and intellectual point, the competitions are to be commended and the manager, Mr. BURNS is to be congratulated on his endeavours to promote such a healthy medium for the children to exercise their mental powers.
