ASSAULTING A POLICEMAN

WOMAN’S COMPLIMENTARY ACT
ACKNOWLEDGED BY THE BENCH.

 Arthur STARKIE, (28), labourer, 12, Burley Court, Whitehaven, was charged with having assaultedP. C. PRENTICE in the Newtown, Whitehaven, at 10-30 p.m., on the 6th August.
 
 P. C. PRENTICE said he received information about the prisoner’s conduct in a previous charge of having been drunk and disorderly, and he advised him to go home when the prisoner struck him in the mouth, and brought blood. A woman came to his assistance and blew witnesses whistle.
 
 Inspector THORNBORROW came on the scene, and the prisoner got witness down and kicked and clawed him. With the assistance of two civilians and the inspector the prisoner was carried to the Police Station.
 
 Inspector THORNBORROW gave evidence corroborating the previous witness’ statement. The constable’s lip was cut and bleeding, and his face was covered with scratches.
 
 On the 18th May, 1903, prisoner was charged for a similar offence as this.
 
 Prisoner who was on a charge of having been drunk and disorderly was fined 10s or seven days imprisonment, for the assault and was fined 40s or one month’s imprisonment, one term of imprisonment to follow the other.
 
 The Chairman to P. C. PRENTICE: Who was the woman who blew the whistle?
 
 P. C. PRENTICE: Mrs. JOYCE, of Albion-street. She had her child in her arm at the time.
 
 The Chairman: The Bench think I ought to thank her for the help she gave you. I am sure Supt. HOGG will also be grateful to her.
 
 Supt. HOGG also thanked her, and said that the police would attend to the matter.
