ALMOST DROWNED IN THE SOLWAY. ____ FLIMBY MAN SAVES HIS SIXTH LIFE. _____ On Monday evening a youth named Edward MURPHY, about 16 years of age, had a narrow escape from drowning. MURPHY, who can swim a little, was bathing in the sea when he got out of his depths. After struggling for some time against the receding tide his cries for help were heard by Messrs. George PICKERING and W. HOLSTEAD, who were returning to shore in their boat after being out fishing. PICKERING at first threw the drowning youth an oar, which he could not catch. They then got the boat nearer and PICKERING was just in time to grasp him by the arm as he was sinking. They got him into the boat, and after being landed he was able with assistance to dress and go to his home. PICKERING, who is a coal miner, devotes his spare time to fishing and boating, and this is the sixth life he has saved from drowning during the last few years. |
