SEASCALE.
~~~~~~~~~
A large number of visitors have been here for the Easter holidays.  Most of
the lodging-houses were occupied, whilst the accommodation at the hotel was
taxed to its utmost capacity.
A number of guests at the hotel who had not arranged in time for bedrooms
had to be sent out on Thursday night.  This popular hostelry means to
sustain its good reputation, particularly in the catering line.  The good
supply of splendidly cooked lamb was a noticeable feature of Thursday's
'table d'hote' dinner, whilst on Good Friday, there was an abundance of
salmon that cost 3s per lb.
The rainstorm that prevailed just before morning service, caused the
attendance at church to be small, and the lateness of the up train put the
bell ringer in a fix, as he is also one of the porters.  One of the parish
councillors kindly relieved him of the bell-ringing on this occasion.
When the weather cleared up in the afternoon, a large number of golfers went
to the links and had a good time there.  The new pavilion was opened for the
first time, and the members of the club can now be supplied with
refreshments.
A couple of ship's berth's beds were washed up on the beach last week.  They
were made of canvas and stuffed with straw.
Some of the tourists who started off early, before the storm came on, on
Good Friday morning, for a bit of mountain climbing, had a soaking time of
it in the walk between Gosforth and Wasdale.
MR. HELDER, M.P., attended service at church here on Sunday evening, it
being the occasion of the opening of the organ recently purchased from St.
Bees, taken over and re-erected.  The service was conducted byu the REV.
REES KEENE, rector.  MR. TOWNSON, of Whitehaven, presided at the organ,
which gave every satisfaction to the congregation.  The anthem in the
evening was "They have taken away the Lord".
MR. WARDER, Wansfell, has presented to the church a cross and pair of vases
in brass for the altar.  The beautiful white flowers which were placed on
the altar and about the font were provided by the same lady.
The Parish Council meets for the first time this evening (Thursday), in the
School.  One councillor, in his anxiety not to miss, went to the church last
Thursday, thinking the meeting would be held in the vetry.
