Page 2 of 7 LOCAL NOTES. _______________ EGREMONT. ````````````````` The Joint Jubilee Committee have decided to give the children and the old folks of the district a treat, the former each to be presented with a medal. There are about 1,600 children on the books. MR. HENRY HARTLEY, of Moor Row, has generously offered the use of a field for the day, although he is, of course, not prepared to hand it over as a permanent recreation ground. The following parties have been appointed to collect subscriptions, in connection with the Jubilee celebrations: - Bigrigg and Woodend - MESSRS. W. CARLETON, T. BARBOUR, W. ASHBURNER, and R. SHANKS Moor Row and Scalegill - MESSRS. H. HARTLEY, H. M'DOWALL, T. WEIR, T. H. BRAITHWAITE, J. L. JACKSON, and J. FLETCHER. Egremont - MESSRS. W. ARMSTRONG, E. BROMLEY, J. NELSON, J. SMITH, J. C. FARQUHARSON, J. J. WILSON, and JOHN MITCHELL. The "Cat" Inn is to be taken over by MR. R. SHORTRIDGE. LEONARD IRVING has taken the theory certificate in Pitman's shorthand. The Rifle Volunteers held a successful pic-nic at Cleator on Good Friday, music being supplied by the volunteer band. The children attending the Parish Church Sunday School had their annual outing on Monday. The first uniform drill of the Rifle Volunteers in open air took place on Monday night, under the command of CAPTAIN THOMPSON, St. Bees. The band, under the leadership of MR. LEECE, rendered musical selections. The Easter shooting in connection with the Volunteers resulted as follows: - CPL. CANFIELD, 72 points PVT. FARRER, 66 SGT-INST. BRANNIGAN, 65 PVT. SITTLETON, 59 PVT CHIDLEY, 58 PVT. T. WILSON, 57 PVT. TOMLINSON, 57 PVT. GLENNY, 55 PVT. FLEMING 55 PVT THOMAS, 55 SGT TYSON, 54 PVT. STAFFORD, 54 COL-SGT. SMITH, 52 PVT. SUMPTON, 50 At the Parish Church on Easter Sunday the REV. W. T. NEWBOLD, St. Bees, conducted the morning service. The rector (REV. W. THWAITES) took the evening service, when the choir rendered a special anthem. =========================================================== |
