There was a great throng of people witnessing the football playing at Workington on Tuesday. WILLIAM CARTER, a miner, who left Millom two years ago, has died suddenly in South Africa. The Plymouth Brethren held special gospel meetings in the Town Hall on Sunday. The Ladies' Kennel Association have started a fund to organise opposition to the new muzzling order. "The Carmanian", a three-masted ship, was launched from Workington shipyard on Monday. MR. FISHER's coachman at Distington Hall met with a painful accident on Good Friday, by being thrown from a horse that he was riding. G. F. WINDROSS and W. H. VICKERS arrived at Liverpool from Canada by the 'Parisian' on Monday and reached Whitehaven the same evening. Seaton beat Cockermouth in the Rugby Cup final at Whitehaven by 14 points to nil, and were afterwards presented the cup by MR. R. WESTRAY. Both the HON. H. V. DUNCOMBE, M.P., and MR. HELDER, M.P., say that the Whitehaven "Gazette" is the most interesting paper published in the district. The Whitehaven Artillery Volunteers attended service at St. James' Church on Sunday morning. CAPTAIN W. DICKINSON and LIEUTENANTS J. W. PATTINSON and H. ARMSTRONG were the officers present. DR. RING, medical officer of health, Keswick, was seized with illness during service at Crosthwaite Church on Sunday. He had every assistance, and was carried outside, but death quickly ensued. MR. H. D. SHARDLOW, head master at Lapstone-road Board School, Millom, was on Monday crossing some iron spiked railings by means of a board placed on the top, when the board slipped and he received four serious wounds on the thighs. A meeting of the Cumberland Rifle Association was held on Thursday, CAPT. J. A. JACKSON, Whitehaven, presiding. PVT. CHICKEN (Wigton), having won out the Lord Lieutenant's cup, the secretary was instructed to write to LORD MUNCASTER, asking him to replace the cup. It was received that future winners of the Lord Lieutenant's cups be awarded a badge by the Association. At Warwick Board of Guardians on Saturday, MR. GILBERT proposed, and LORD LEIGH seconded, that every adult in the Union in receipt of out-door relief should be given an extra half-crown in the Jubilee week to commemorate the Queen's long reign. After some discussion, the question was adjourned till the Local Government Board be consulted. Perhaps the Whitehaven Board will do likewise. |
