LOCAL AND GENERAL ITEMS.

The annual supper and ball, for the benefit of MR. GEO. WILKINSON, was held
in the Town Hall on Monday evening, when there were about 70 couples
present, and MR. H. WEIR's band supplied the music.

Since MR. JONES took charge of Preston-street Station, he has opened
communication with the merchants and traders of town by means of the use of
the telephone, and the result has been most satisfactory and advantageous to
all parties concerned.

The subscribers to the fund that was raised some time ago for the purpose of
placing a lectern in memory of the late MR. BENTINCK, in Trinity Church in
this town, amounting, it is said to some £40 or £50, are anxious to know
what has been done with their money.

The Westoe team with CAPTAIN GOWAN, brother to the famed Scotch football
player of that name, stayed at the Grand Hotel on Monday night after their
defeat and won the admiration of the manageress by their gentlemanly
behaviour.

It is pretty well understood that MR. J. S. AINSWORTH will be the Radical
candidate for the Egremont Division at the next election.  There is a rumour
afloat to the effect that his elder brother MR. DAVID AINSWORTH is desirous
to accept an invitation to stand for another constituency.

The Education Department have issued particulars of the estimated grants to
School Boards payable under the bill to amend Section 97 of the Elementary
Education Act, 1870, from which we gather that Cumberland School Boards will
receive £1,640 which will be distributed as follows: - Aspatria and Brayton,
£10;   Blennerhasset and Kirkland, £46;    Caldbeck, £1;    Dearham, £107;
Distington, £102;    Ellenborough and Ewanrigg, £8;    Farlam, £69;
Flimby, £106;    Great Broughton, £89;    Great and Little Clifton (UD),
£90;    Harrington, £92;    Kirkbride, £16;    Workington (Borough), £904.

The new Parish Council at Hensingham held their first meeting on Thursday.
Present:

REV. W*LL WILKINSON
MESSRS. IRELAND,   BROWN,   BANKS,   MESSENGER,   PHILLIPS, TAYLOR,
DAVIDSON,   BARWISE,   WILKINSON, jun.,   WATSON,   WADE,  and  TODD;   with
MR. G. NICHOLSON (clerk).

MR. WILKINSON was re-elected chairman, and MESSRS PHILLIPS and BROWN
received equal votes for the vice-chair, but MR. BROWN gave way to MR.
PHILLIPS.

MR. WRIGHT, Keekle, wrote resigning his seat on the Council, and MR. J. I.
SELBY was elected in his place.

MESSRS TOOD,   WADE,  and  BARWISE were appointed overseers for the ensuing
year.

It was decided that in future the Council should have its meetings every two
months.  The Clerk applied for an increase of salary from £35 to £50 a year,
but the matter was deferred till next meeting.
