HOW WE SPENT GOOD FRIDAY continued.............................

The snow flakes filled our eyes and ears, and the water ran down every part
of our anatomy which was exposed, even filling the pockets of our jackets
(only two of the party wore overcoats), and right into our boots.  Still we
were wonderfully happy, considering our plight.  Jokes were even made about
the weights we were carrying - one facetious member asserting that we were
not exactly in racing trim for a hundred yards spin.

Our goal, the Angler's Inn, was reached just before dinner-time, and a yokel
greeted us with the question "Had we got wet?"  If looks could have
transfixed that individual, then you bet he got them.  No, we were not wet -
only limp.  Had we been dragged through the lake from end to end, our
clothes would not have absorbed another drop of moisture.

We were now somewhat in a dilemma.  Our clothes required drying, but two
days in such a place as the drying-room of the Whitehaven Baths would be
necessary for that purpose, and this was not at hand.  Then again, duty
called us home that night, so that "time was of the essence of the
contract", as a shipbroker would say.  As the result, however, of a
ransacking in drawers, cupboards, and boxes, quite an assortment of garments
was turned out by our genial landlady, and eventually every member of the
party was "rigged out".

Do not imagine that the cut and fit were all that could be desired;  still
it was quite refreshing to get into dry clothes, and we felt greatly
indebted to the resources of the country inn which enabled us to reach home
none the worse of our experiences on the fells, and fit for business on
Saturday morning.
