BOARD OF GUARDIANS.

The fortnightly meeting was held on Thursday last.  Present:  REV. A. F.
CURWEN (chairman),   REV. G. B. ARMES,   REV. R. HAYTHORNTHWAITE,   REV. E.
H. SUGDEN,   REV. S. G. CRAIG,   REV. C. B. KENGELBACHER,   REV. E. N. WARD,
and MESSRS DEES,   PEARSON,   ATKINSON,   DICKINSON,   J. J. DIXON,   G.
DIXON,  DALZELL,   BENSON,   T. KITCHIN,   REDSHAW,   PETTIGREW,   S. DIXON,
BANKS,   MITCHELL,   HARTLEY,   MOORE, WATSON,   BLACK,   MUSGRAVE,
KENWORTHY,   SALKELD,   BRAGG (Whitehaven),   BRAGG (Beckermet),   and
ATKINSON;  with MR. ATKINSON (clerk).

    The REV. A. F. CURWEN and MR. DEES were unanimously elected to the chair
and vice-chair respectively for the next year.

    The report of the Workhouse Chaplain (REV. J. ANDERSON) was as follows:

"Divine services is well attended and decorous.  The quiet throughout the
house is commendable.  I cannot consistently approve of other services being
conducted in the house which interfere with the Church of England inmates."

    The Assessment Committee reported that during the year there had been
nine meetings, the attendances being as follows:

MR. DEES, 8;   MR. J. J. DIXON, 7;   REV. A. F. CURWEN, 2;   MR. HARTLEY, 6;
MR. PETTIGREW, 9;   MR. KENWORTHY, 7;   MR. JENKINS, 4;   MR. BROWN, 3;
MR. MOORE, 6,   MR. FLETCHER, 0;   MR. ATKINSON, 5;   MR. M'GOWAN, 3.

    They had heard 179 objections to the valuations, 56 were confirmed, and
123 reduced.
The total ratable value of the Union was £314,558, showing an increase of
£6,144 during the year just expired;   the present assessable value of the
Union was £291,131.

They had carried out the provisions of the Agricultural Rates Act, which had
necessitated the making of two additional lists for each parish.  The
committee recommended the payment of £150 to their clerk as recommended for
services rendered up to March 25th last.

    The committees were re-elected with one or two alterations.  --  MISS
WALKER    , Kelswick House, was added to the Ladies' Visiting Committee, on
the motion of MR. ARMES.   --  The Clerk said he had received 24
applications for the post of porter, 12 for the post of taskmaster, and 37
for that of caretaker.

    On the motion of the Chairman, seconded by MR. DEES, it was decided to
refer the matter to the House Committee.  --  MR. MUSGRAVE considered that
the remuneration offered for a caretaker was too small, and would propose,
if necessary, that the Board consider the question of salary.

MR. TELFER, late assistant-overseer at Sandwith, wrote asking whether the
Board had fixed upon any compensation to be paid him for the loss of salary
in respect of his late office.  The Clerk said he expected MR. PETTIGREW
would be in a position to make a motion on the subject at the next meeting.
