 STRAY NOTES     ~continued.
It must not be inferred that Mr. HELDER is
not interested in the concern, because his name
does not appear amongst the directors.  He is
deeply interested in it.  He is not likely to with-
hold a helping hand to anything that needs it in
Whitehaven, and this he can do behind the curtain
just as heartily as from the platform.
Having faith in the men and in the venture I
don't hesitate to foretell success.  I only hope
that all who have the interests of the good old
town at heart will assist in every possible way to
launch the promising barque that now stands
upon the stocks ready for a prosperous career.
With the Ironworks in full blast, the provision
of a good school at Mount Pleasant, a daily
service of steamers to the Isle of Man, and the
acquisition of a peal of bells, we will have a lot to
be thankful for, and will have much occasion to
remember Her Majesty's diamond jubilee.
We have the Ironworks on the way, the school
question shapes better than promised last week,
and perhaps the Major has a card up his sleeve
about the Manx daily service, but as to the bells
they will be forthcoming when they are wanted.
The raid made by the police on the Black Horse
Inn during the time the sale of Printing machinery
was on in the old "Pacquet" Office caused
Schoolhouse-lane to be quite a lively neighbour-
hood on Tuesday last.
The procession to the police-court must have
been a rare spectacle, as I have been informed the
noble army of martyrs consisted of twenty-eight
men, one woman, and a dog, all of whom were
remanded till to-day.
