Some of the residents here are proud of their little town now, and, considering the improvements that have recently been effected, they have every reason to be so.
But when they get the Main-street planted with trees, and those two fountains erected(!), some of the more enthusiastic inhabitants will be at a loss to know how to hold their heads on.
On Sunday the Rev. G. S. WORTHINGTON, in the Castle United Methodist Free Church, under the auspices of the Egremont Free Methodist Band of Hope, when the subject of his sermon was "The Importance of the Band of Hope Movement."
This festival was followed on Tuesday by a public tea and service of song entitled "The Five Steps to Ruin and the Five Steps to Honour," composed by Mr. John COOK, of Cockermouth, and rendered by the Band of Hope members. Mr. Wm. LECK occupied the chair.
There was a large attendance at the Temperance Society's entertainment on Friday evening in the Co-operative Hall. Mr. W. K. BOUCH, East House, presided, and the following took part:---Misses CARTNER (2), Mary DOWNES, GIBSON, WILLIAMS, BIRKETT, BROWNRIGG, EWART, DIXON, STANFIELD, and BOAG; Master NICHOLSON, and Messrs. J. H. GAINFORD, J. LAKE, and T. HALE.
A tea and entertainment in connection with the C.E.T.S. was held in the Parish Room on Friday evening. The following assisted at tea:-- Mrs. ADAIR, Mrs. CALDERWOOD, Mrs. DOBIN, Mrs. GARNETT, Mrs. HELLON, Mrs. SPEDDING, Mrs. IRVING, Mrs. THWAITES, Miss M'CLELLAN, Miss CALDERWOOD, Miss MOORE, Miss MUNCASTER, and Miss BENSON. The following took part in the entertainment :-- Mr. ABBOTT, Misses DOBBIN (2), Miss KITCHIN, Miss MOORE, Mrs. THWAITES, and Mrs. CALDERWOOD.
