Considerable interest is being manifested in Cleator Moor respecting the forthcoming election of Urban District Councillors, which takes place on Wednesday next.
Seven candidates have been nominated to contest the North Ward, for which there are three seats, the nominations being as follows:-- J. FLYNN, A. E. LAMB, J. MANDALE, E. N. WARD, H. WARD, G. WATSON, and the late Mr. J. JENKINS.
Four candidates seek election in the South Ward, for which only two members are required. The following parties have been nominated:-- F. ATKINSON, W. GAYTHWAITE, J. IRVING, and J. McLAUCHLAN.
A service of song, entitled "Sowing Wild Oats," was given in the Congregational Church, Cleator Moor, on Sunday last, by the Moor Row Methodist Free Church Choir, the conductor being Mr. J. MYERS, and the reader Mr. J. ARMSTRONG. A collection was taken in aid of the organ fund.
In connection with the same a public tea was held on Monday afternoon, and was followed by a public meeting in the evening, when the Rev. J. E. FLOWER, M.A., of London, addressed the meeting. Mr. J. G. OLDFIELD, of Whitehaven, occupied the chair.
It is to be hoped that the women of Cleator Moor will take advantage of the forthcoming series of lectures on "Home nursing," which are to be given by Mrs. Catherine HAYNES.
Mr. Thomas BURNS, who left Cleator in 1894, has been drowned in a dam belonging to a gold mine near to Boxburg.
Mr. W. DIXON, chairman of the District Council, is having "Cleator Gate" done up, prior to his removal there.
The Moor Row Continuation Class and their friends had a supper on Friday evening, the occasion being the winding-up of the session. Supper was served by the following:--Mesdames MARTIN, J. STEELE, WATSON, BIRBECK, and Miss D. STEELE. Songs were contributed by Miss STEELE and Mr. BERRYMAN.
