Mr. Wm M'GOWAN is on the return voyage, his

health being considerably improved.

The Whitehaven Branch of the Church Missionary

Society held their annual sale of work at the

Scientific Rooms on Tuesday, the proceeds of which

are to be devoted to the society's funds.

Lantern services were held in the Wesleyan

Chapel, Hensingham, on Monday and Tuesday. The

Rev. J.C. HARRISON, of Cleator Moor, gave an address

on "The Pilgrim's Progress," and hymns, Scripture

scenes, and views illustrative of BUNYAN'S work

were thrown on the screen.

A concert and ball were held at Parton on Friday

evening in aid of the Indian Famine Fund. There

was a good attendance, and Mr. J. ANDERSON

presided. Messrs T. HOOPER, jun., MATTHEWS,

DOUGLAS, ATKINSON (2), HOOPER, BELL, and

LENARS took part, and Messrs. W. ATKINSON,

BELL, and DREWERY were M.C.'s at the ball.
