Page 4 of 4 LOCAL AND GENERAL ITEMS ********** continued A lady spoke to a legal gentleman on the streets of Whitehaven the other day complaining that Satan was so very busy at present converting Protestants to Romanism,, and got for a reply "Well, I am glad that somebody is busy in Whitehaven, for I certainly am not." ********** A sensation was caused at Workington on Monday by the sudden death of Mrs. BRYDEN, wife of Mr. BRYDEN, dancing master. Deceased was assisting to prepare the Public Hall for a juvenile dance, when she fell down in a fit, from which she never re- covered. She was taken to her home, and expired there. ********** Mr. John JENKINS, of Keekle Grove, died suddenly at an early hour on Monday morning. He had attended church both morning and evening on the previous day. An inquest was not considered neces- sary, as Dr. EATON had been attending him for the past three years, his complaint being heart disease. Mr. JENKINS has been connected with the coal and iron industries of this district for fifty years. ********** The Mayor (Alderman PATTINSON), Alderman W.H. KITCHIN, and Councillors T.K. METCALF sat as arbitrators at the Town Hall on Monday afternoon last, in the dispute tetween Captain LAIDLAW and the Whitehaven and West Cumberland Benefit Building Society. Mr. W.H. CHAPMAN appeared for the plain- tiff, and Mr J.R. THOMPSON for the Building Society. The enquiry was finished and the arbitrators will make their award shortly. ********** |
