The following is a sample of American advertising:

The coal hewers at Watergate Colliery have been
idle for about a week in consequence of the strike of
lads employed as drivers, brakesmen, $c., but the
hewers resumed work on Monday morning, some of
them to act in the places vacated by the lads.

Trade is very brisk at Senhouse Dock, Maryport,
at present.  At Barrow, however, a prolonged trouble
in the engineering trade is expected, and this is
having an effect on the hematite market.  The work-
men at the shipyards are well employed, but fresh
orders are needed.

At Ulverston on Saturday, Mary CORKILL, 26 years
of age, was charged with abandoning her child at
Dalton-in-Furness, the baby having been found on a
doorstep at Dalton.  For some time the police could
obtain no clue, but eventually the prisoner was
arrested.  She was remanded till to-day (Thursday).

Last Thursday night a lecture, under the auspices
of the Young Men's Christian Association, was given
in the Town Hall by Mr. T. LONDON (late lecturer for
the Cumberland County Council).  The subject was
"How we hear and how we speak," and the lecture
was a most instructive one.  Alderman BOWMAN pre-
sided.

shortly.

It is expected that the final report of the Royal
Commission on Agricultural Depression will be
issued in May.

The Fox-hunting season ends on Wednesday next.
