Page 3 of 3 Ladies' Column (con't) ****
Have you heard of the Vegetarian Cycling Club? I hear it has a great many members; and in 1896 a ladies' section was started with about thirty members. As many have joined the club this season, it evidently proves that a diet of flesh is by no means necessary for the enjoyment of this favourite pastime. Cycling is such a craze with some women, is it not/ They talk incessantly and exclusively about it, and most learnedly to those who can least follow them. Perhaps they would not absolutely deny in words that there are any other sports or pastimes, but I quite think in their heart of hearts they doubt it. Of course their particular machine is "the one" in the world, and their maker absolutely without a rival, and should you dispute this fact, it is quite possible that "high words" might ensue. News-paper articles on bicycling are constantly to be met with, and there is rarely on in which the question is not asked in so many words, "Has bicycling come to stay?" I notice, however, that this question is seldom answered; but don't you think one might venture to say that it will stay, at any rate until something better is found to take its place, that something combining pace and pleasant exercise as completely. We do not believe that auto-cars or motor-cycles driven by air propellers, or forced along the road by com- plicated machinery, or even the flying machines that have been exhibited lately, if not used, will ever oust bicycles from their position in popular favour.---Ever yours, EDNIA
