Wm. BAWDEN, 37, Cleator Moor, was sent to gaol for 14 days with hard labour  
for begging. He had been before the Bench on 16 previous occasions for being  
drunk and disorderly.

P. TRAINOR and J. PUGH were summoned for having been drunk and refusing to  
quit. TRAINOR did not appear, and a warrant was granted for his apprehenshion,  
and PUGH was fined 15s., or 14 days.

A. CAULCOTT was fined 15s., or 14 days for having kept a dog without a  
license.

P. CASSIDY, J. CONNOR, R. KNOWLES, T. LLOYD and H. M'CLUSKEY were fined 5s  
for neglecting to send their children regularly to school.

Wilfrid BELL was summoned for having neglected his children. The case had  
been adjourned for a month to all defendant a chance to keep his family in  
better circumstances.
 
Inspector SANDERSON stated that a week after the adjournment he visited  
defendant's house, which was clean, as well as the children and the bed. He also  
visited the home on May 6th, and found the kitchen very dirty. The infant was  
lying on a chair crying pitifully, and was in a filthy condition, there being 
no  one else in the house to mind the child. There was no fire or coal in the 
house.  He found other children away from the house; their heads covered with 
vermin and  their clothes were torn and dirty. One of them had had no dinner.
 
Witness again visited the house on Wednesday last. The kitchen was again  
very dirty. There were old rags and clothes about the room, and the bed was in a  
filthy condition. There was no fire, and the only food in the house was a  
portion of a small loaf and a few stalks of rhubarb. The rooms upstairs were in  
a filthy condition. The ordour from the bed was awful.
 
Defendant was sentenced to two months imprisonment with hard labour, the  
children to go to the workhouse.
 
Defendant: Make it a fine.
 
The Chairman: No, it is not a case for a fine. You have had plenty  
opportunities.

Mr. ATTER applied for the temporary authority of the license of the Royal  
Standard, West Strand, from Mr. J. STAMPER to Mr. W. CHORLEY of Bradford. -  
Granted.

MONDAY.
 
Mr. ATTER applied for temporary authority for the license of the Harbour  
Hotel, Harrington, from Mrs. NEWTON to Mrs. M'NICHOL, Keswick. - Granted.

Jas. TURNER was charged with stealing a shawl, the property of Mrs.  HODGSON, 
Arlecdon. T. HODGSON, complainant's son, said he had been loading some  pigs 
into his cart in Market Place, Whitehaven, on Thursday last, and after he  had 
left Market Place he missed a shawl from the cart, and gave information to  
the police.
 
P. C. STEELE deposed to apprehending the prisoner and charging him with the  
theft, his reply being: Yes, I have it, has Mrs. HODGSON come back for it? If  
she has the shawl is at my house. I didn't steal it; I found it lying on the  
ground after the cart had gone." - Case dismissed.
