MEALS FOR THE LONDON POOR.
 
 
    The Lord Mayor of London, received a cheque for  £25,000, for the 
Princess of Wales' fund for providing a substantial meal for  the poor on Jubilee 
Day. The Lord Mayor is not at liberty to mention the name of  the donor, but it 
is now pretty well known to be Mr. LIPTON, the provision  merchant, who has 
shops all over the country, and it may be added that this is  the same Mr. 
LIPTON, who has taken the premises in King-street, recently  occupied by Messrs. 
WILLIAMSON and LOWRY, and formerly by Messrs. FISHER and  COULTHARD. As the 
amount received is considered sufficient, the fund has been  closed.

INQUEST.
 
An inquest held at Bethnal Green last week the facts were revealed that the  
deceased named BELLNAP had £850 left him, which he had spent in enjoying  
himself; one mode wwas by getting married, although he was over 70 years old,  
another was in burying his mother-in-law. When the money was done, the wife  
which was his fourth, turned him out. His death was said to be due to  syncope.

WALK MILL PIT STRIKE.
 
The workmen employed at Walk Mill Pit, Moresby, went on strike Saturday, in  
consequence of a proposed reduction of from 50 to 33 per cent, in the 
separation  of round and small coal; they have decided to remain idle until 
satisfactory  arrangements have been made.

The annual meeting of the Church Sanitary Association last week, in London,  
a resolution was adopted recommending the substitution of the  Scotch  method 
of swearing with uplifted hand, in place of the present system of kissing  the 
book.
