LOCAL NEWS ITEMS EGREMONT. ****** The annual court leet of the borough and manor of Egremont and the manor of Kinniside was held on Friday. Mr. J. NICHOLSON was appointed borough constable, Messrs. J. STOUT and G. RIGG bailiffs, Messrs. J. MITCHELL and W. BENSON hedge lookers, Messrs. D. BRAITHWAITE and J. SMITH market lookers, and Mr. W. HEAD pinfold keeper. A presentment was made in respect to the watering place at Brisco Mill, which has been partly closed. It was understood that the question would be taken up by the District Council. Dinner was partaken of at the Wheat Sheaf Hotel. ****** Mr. J. SNOWDEN, aged 56 died on Wednesday last from the effects of cancer, and the funeral took place on Sunday. He was a native of Cockermouth, but of late years has been in the employ of Wyndham Mining Company. He leaves a widow to mourn his loss. ****** Some discussion arose at the meeting of the Diamond Jubilee Committee on Wednesday last as to whether Bigrigg people should have a tea provided separately at Bigrigg in order to do away with the need of their coming to Egremont on Jubilee Day. It was eventually decided that the representatives of the Bigrigg and Moor Row portions of the parish be called together to discuss the question. ****** The sub-committee met the ladies committee with reference to the spending of the £10 that remained over from the last Jubilee festival, and the ladies preferred to carry out the work of providing tea for the old people themselves. The Diamond Jubilee Committee decided to help the ladies in the work. ****** The United Methodist Free Church have decided to have their annual trip to Beckfoot, Eskdale, on June 1st. ****** Mr. IRELAND gave a public tea at the Methodist Free Church School Room on Tuesday evening. ****** Mr. Josiah NIX, London, lectured in the Town Hall on Tuesday evening on "Aggressive Christianity." Mr. W. FRANKS, Whitehaven was chairman. ******
