LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS ITEMS. ****** John SHARPE, was on Tuesday committed for trial at the Mansion House, London,charged with stealing and receiving jewellery, worth over £1,000 the proceeds of a shop robbery, at Ludgate Hill. ****** Millom Conservative and Unionist Club held their annual meeting on Saturday evening, when Mr. W. LEWTHWAITE, who presided, stated that during the year they had made 65 new members, making a total of 235. ****** The Hon. H. V. DUNCOMBE, M. P., has accepted the apology of the Seascale radical, who libelled him on a postcard, so, no further proceedings will be taken. It is to be hoped this generous action, will be appreciated. ****** The West Cumberland Otter Hounds will meet as follows: Saturday, May 22nd, at Derwent Bridge (for down stream); Wednesday the 26th, at Bullgill; Saturday the 29th, at Kennels (for Cocker) - each morning at nine o'clock. ****** Mr. L. T. HELDER, speaking on Monday evening at Seascale in favor of something being done to celebrate the Jubilee, said he was ashamed that at Whit ehaven nothing of a permanent character would commemorate the occasion. ****** Bicycle accidents are numerous right now. On Sunday last Mr. FEWKES had a fall close to Bransty Station, and on the same day Mr. FLETCHER, jun., of Brigham Hill, had a similar accident. Neither were attended with serious results. ****** The half yearly inspection of Whitehaven Lifeboat and Crew took place yesterday (Wednesday) when Lieut. STRACE, R. N., was the inspector. The boat was launched about noon, and was maneuvered for over an hour. The inspector expressed satisfaction with the men's performance. ****** A large company patronised the Albert ate Repository, London on Monday, when the catalogue contained the entire stud of harness horses the property of the Earl of LONSDALE. They were 13 in number, all chestnut geldings, and they realised a total of 2,606gs. ****** Capt. J. Arthur JACKSON yesterday received a telegram from the adjutant ordering the Whitehaven Rifle Volunteers to mobilize this Thursday evening. The Corps will assemble in the Granary Yard, in heavy marching order, and proceed to Bransty Station. Probably the band will be in attendance. ******
