LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS ITEMS. ****** The ss Lizzie arrived at Whitehaven on Tuesday morning with a cargo of gelatine dynamite, consigned to various agents in the district, chiefly Messrs. H. KITCHIN & Co., Whitehaven. There was a large attendance of horses and carts, which conveyed the dangerous commodity speedily away. ****** The body of a male child, well dressed, was found in Pow Beck, St. Bees, on Tuesday evening. A "post mortem" examination was held by Dr. DICKSON yesterday, (Wednesday), in the Coach-house of the Albers (sp?) Hotel. An inquest will be held at St. Bees to-day. It is understood that a woman is in custody, and will be brought before the Whitehaven magistrates to-day. ****** The British Woman's Temperance Association held a rummage sale in the Sailor's Bethel on Friday afternoon. Mrs. Dr. JACKSON opened the sale in a neat speech, and the sale was conducted by the members of the committee. There was a large attendance, and the proceeds were devoted to the Jubilee Mission House Fund. The working woman's branch will have an outing to St. Bees on June 14th. ****** An entertainment was given by the Whitehaven Jubilee choir, consisting of 40 juveniles, in the Oddfellows Hall, on Tuesday evening, when there was a good audience. Mr. H. J. WHITESIDE, presided, and an excellent programme of music and recitations was gone through, the children being under the conductorship of Mr. J. CONNOR.
