ULPHA AND SEATHWAITE NEWS. ****** We regret to announce the death of Mr. George DAWSON of Low Holling House, Seathwaite, which occurred on Thursday last, at the age of 67 years. Mr. DAWSON was much respected in the neighbourhood, having lived in the Duddon Valley the whole of his life. He was of a quiet, kind, and unassuming disposition, ever ready to lend a neighbour assistance. He leaves a widow and a grown up family, for whom the greatest sympathy is felt in their sad bereavement. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon at the Parish Church, Seathwaite and was largely attended by relatives and friends, deceased being a member of the Friendly Benevolent United Order of Mechanics, who walked in procession. The officiating minister was the Vicar of Seathwaite, who conducted the burial service in a most impressive manner. ** The Choir had their annual trip on Saturday, Grasmere being the place chosen for the occasion. The members of the choir were accompanied by the Vicar and the churchwardens. The party left Ulpha at seven o'clock by Mr. MATRINDALE's char-a-banc, and after reaching Grasmere an excellent lunch was partaken of and heartily enjoyed by all. After lunch visits were made to local places of interest. Altogether a very pleasant day was spent by all. ** ULPHA SUPPLEMENTARY SALE OF WORK. On Thursday last the articles of needlework and pottery, unsold at the Easter sale, together with some silver repousse work done by the Vicar, were arranged for sale in the Brow Foot Room, Ulpha, kindly lent by Mr. Jno. GUNSON. Besides a fair number of parishioners, some kind and influential ladies outside the parish assisted the object by their purchases, repeating their kindness at the former sale. Amongst them were the Hon. Mrs. CROSS and party, Mrs. SAWREY-COOKSON and party, Mrs. COOPER (Durham) and party, Mrs. CAMPBELL (St. George's, Barrow), Mrs. WHITAKER (Kendal), Mrs. Wilson BUTLER, and other friends of Ulpha. Ladies of the parish volunteered valued help to provide and preside over the refreshments, and much to the success of the afternoon is due to their efforts. This efficient help was rendered by: - Mrs. CASSON (Brow Foot) Mrs. R. HUTCHINSON (Bobbin Mill) Mrs. GUNSON (Moss Cottage) Mrs. W. PARK (School House) Mrs. TYSON (School House) Miss. LINDSAY (Kirkhouse) Miss. STEPHENSON (Crosbythwaite). Mrs. WHITAKER, assisted by her family and relatives, had charge of the stalls, and the amount realised after paying all expenses was £14 6s 4d. The sum remaining to be raised in addition to an expected grant from the Diocesan Society is £35 to complete the estimated cost of the necessary improvements of water supply. bath-room. &c., at Ulpha Vicarage. ****** |
