Railway Fatality At Moresby

RAILWAY FATALITY AT MORESBY.        A shocking fatality occurred on the Cleator and Workington Railway Line, near Moresby, yesterday at noon. It appears that a coalminer named James DRAKE, who lives at 15, Wyndham Street, Cleator Moor, was proceeding along the line to his work at the Moresby Colliery when he was overtaken by a goods train and killed instantly. DRAKE was a shiftsman, and was on his way to commence work on the second shift in company with a man named Patrick M'COURT, of Bowthorn-road, Cleator Moor. They got on the Railway near to Whinney Hill and proceeded in the direction of Moresby. When they were just beyond Low Wreay M'COURT says that they heard an engine, but they did not expect a train coming behind them. They did not look to see however, and continued to walk along the four foot way.        Both of them were knocked down by the train, and M'COURT states that the train passed over him. When he got up again he waved his hand for the driver to stop, and the driver on the banker engine noticed that another man was hanging on the sand pipe of the first engine.        DRAKE was picked up dead, and found to be disfigured about his body. He was conveyed to the Cleator Moor Station by some platelayers, and his body placed in the goods shed. It is rather singular that M'COURT escaped unhurt, but the unfortunate man was very deaf and would not be able to hear the approach of the engine. DRAKE was a single man, and the news of the fatality caused quite a sensation in Cleator Moor. The inquest will be held to-day (Thursday.) ******
