MESSRS. J. PATTINSON & SON
           WHITEHAVEN.
                ______

   TREAT TO EMPLOYEES.

Yesterday (Wednesday) the whole of the employees of the firm of
Messrs. John PATTINSON & Son, of the Whitehaven Flour Mills, and the crew of the
Steamer Clint, were given a splendid outing to Bassenthwaite.

The journey was made per road, in three wagonettes. On arriving at
Ravenstons the party was most heartily received by Mrs. PATTINSON and family and
lunch partaken of. Various games were subsequently indulged in, and an
excellent musical programme was rendered. A capital tea was also served to the
employees, and before the company separated the thanks of all were most
enthusiastically accorded to Mrs. PATTINSON and family for the warmth of their welcome and
the generosity displayed.

Notwithstanding the adverse climatic conditions, a most enjoyable day
was spent by all.

WHITEHAVEN FIRE BRIGADE.

The members of this Brigade on Tuesday evening presented a watch to
Engineer MACKENZIE, who leaves Whitehaven on Friday night bound for South
Africa, as a token of their respect. The presentation was subscribed to by the
members of the Brigade alone, and the presentation was made on their behalf by
Capt. WHITE.

Mr. MACKENZIE has been in the employment of the Corporation as a
foreman, and his popularity as a member of the Brigade was shown by this kindly
leave-taking, which was accompanied by the heartiest good wishes for his future
in the sunny south.

In the report of the Fire Brigade prize competition on Saturday, in
another column, the departing member is mistakenly referred to as Fireman
O'NEIL.
