Page 1 of 2 NEWS AND NOTES.****** On Saturday afternoon a tennis match between Egremont and Whitehaven should have been played on the ground of the former, but owing to the inclement weather the match was abandoned. ****** The Rev. C. C. GOODALL, who entered the Primitive Methodist ministry from Workington, and who is now stationed at Greenock, has accepted an invitation for next year to the Skipton Circuit, Yorkshire. ****** Mr. Harry Noel CLARKE, the son of Mr. John Henry Edward CLARKE, J. P. of Hallow Oak, Haverthwaite, is engaged to be married to the eldest daughter of Mr. Arthur W. HUNT, of Longlands, Lancaster. ****** The Queen has graciously accepted a portfolio containing a complete series of the photographic studies by Her Majesty, which have appeared as supplements in "The Graphic" of August 19th, 26th, and September 2nd. ****** The South African mails, ex the R. M. S. Kildonan Castle, arrived at Maderia at seven a. m. on Tuesday. May be accepted at South Hampton early on Saturdau morning. Letters to this district will be delivered on Sunday morning. ****** The annual meeting of the Keswick Gas Company a dividend of 10 per cent was declared upon the original capital, and for prompt payment of accounts consumers have been allowed 5 per cent discount. ****** A special meeting of the members of the Whitehaven branch of the Social Democratic Federation is being called with a view of inviting Mr. John SMITH to contest the Newtown Ward. Mr. SMITH contested the Ward at the bye-election last year, and also on a former occasion stood for Bransty Ward. ****** Loweswater Show will be held next Thursday. The showyard this year is at Kirkstyle. There is an excellent entry in all classes, and no doubt if the weather is anything like favourbale there will be the usual extensive gathering from all parts of west Cumberland of those who look upon this fixture as one of the most popular and enjoyable holidays of the year. ****** Harvest operations are at a standstill in the Beckermet district owing to the rains. Many of the farmers have finished cutting, and some have got a portion led, but what is left will be wasting if the weather continues wet. Angling has been freely indulged in during the last few days by a few devotees of the rod and more or less success. No great catches of the heavier fish, but some good fair baskets of trout have been caught. ****** |
