NEWS AND NOTES WHITEHAVEN. ****** THE PROPOSED ERECTION OF A TABLET IN A WHITEHAVEN CHURCH. The parochial letter of the Vicar (Rev. C. B. S. GILLINGS), in the current issue of St. Nicholas Magazine, contains the following: - I have received a letter from Lt.-Col. G. H. le FLEMING in which he says: "The officers, past and present, of the 3rd Border Regiment would like if possible to place a small tablet in your church at Whitehaven, to the men of the battalion who died in South Africa during the war. Before taking any steps I am naturally writing you to ask for your sanction." By return of post I wrote to him to say that it gave me pleasure to comply with his request for space in which to erect the proposed tablet. ****** HOGARTH MISSION. On Saturday night last the attendance was very good, when Mr. W. HUTTON presided. Miss. Nellie JACKSON rendered two items, by song and recital. Mr. J. MASON provided a capital programme of gramophone selections, which were very well contributed, and received hearty applause. The open air service at the Sugar Tongue on Sunday morning, was in charge of Mr. J. BRIGGS. Messrs. J. DRYDEN, C. ATKINSON and HUTTON also took part. The members of the Mission Brass Band were in attendance and rendered some choice sacred music. The morning preacher at the mission was Mr. DUTSON, whose address was based upon numbers 10th chap., v. 29. Prior to the evening service the workers of the Mission and Brass Band visited the district and gave hearty invitations, Mr. KING officiating as speaker. The Rev. B. C. BARKER preached to a crowded congregation in the evening, upon the "Stoning of Stephen." A very busy days service and happy labour was brought to a close by a well attended prayer meeting. ****** HENSINGHAM BAND OF HOPE. The opening meeting for the winter session, in connection with the above was held on Tuesday night, presided over by Mr. WADE, superintendent, who gave a short address to the children on the evils of drink. Mr. E. APPLEYARD kindly lent his gramophone, on which selections were given, which were manipulated by Mr. J. RAE. There was a full house of children present. ****** ST. JOHN'S CHURCH, HENSINGHAM. The committee appointed to assist the Vicar and churchwardens in carrying out the proposed restoration of this of this church met to consider the responses to the circulars sent out in May soliciting contributions towards the object. Their report is most satisfactory, about £1,240 having been promised. A further sum is required, and the object being a most worthy one deserves the support of all churchmen. ****** TECHNICAL INSTRUCTION AT PARTON. A meeting of the technical instruction Committee was held in the Boy's School on Monday night the following members being present: - S. DAVIES (chairman) J. ROGERSON GREENER C. ROWELL J. BIRD (secretary) The Chairman said that bills had been posted inviting for mining, machine construction, arithmetic, and mensuration, shorthand, ambulance, and music, but the response was very poor, there not being a sufficient number to form a class in any one of the proposed subjects. The past session. though their classes had not been large in numbers, had been very successful. The Committee had got fairly initiated into the work of organisation, and would have very much liked to continue the work. They had a nice balance in hand and were seeking to make the inducements to study even more enticing. The other members also expressed disappointment, and finally it was decided to issue handbills and leave the business open till September 16th in the hope that students would come in sufficient numbers by that time, otherwise the idea of having classes for the coming winter would have to be abandoned. ****** DISTINGTON AND LAYMEN'S FUND FOR THE AUGMENTATION OF POOR BENEFICES IN THE DIOCESE OF CARLISLE. A local treasurer (Miss. RICHARDSON) has been appointed for the Parish of Distington in connection with the above mentioned fund. The object is a worthy and much needed one, and well deserving the support of all those who have the interests and well being of the Church at heart. All subscriptions and donations, however small, are forwarded to the hon. treasurer of the Laymen's Committee, of which Lord CROSS is chairman. ****** |
