LOWICK. A dance was held in the large marquee on the show field, after the show was over on Friday last. The dance was got up by a number of young men who reside in the neighbourhood, and is not in connection with the show. There was a large attendance, and the able M. C.'s aided by the Grizebeck String Band, kept all going merrily. The M. C.'s were: J. HADWIN T. PROCTER E. DICKINSON T. CASSON In the waltzing competition the first prize, a pair of carvers and a cruet, was won by Mr. H. S. BENSON and Miss. HARRISON; the second prize, a pair of lamps was awarded to Mr. G. BARKER and Mrs. WILSON; and the third, two butterdishes, to Mr. and Mrs. FREAR, of Lowick Bridge. ****** Last Wednesday week the scholars of Lowick day school, along with their teachers, were busy observing the eclipse of the sun. Smoked and coloured glass was requisitioned, and a capital observation lesson was the result. ****** On Sunday the Rev. J. PIPER, vicar of Lowick, preached an eloquent and appropriate sermon on the subject from the words "The Heavens Declare the Glory of God, and the Firmament Showeth His Handiwork." ****** WOODLAND NOTES. Harvesting operations have been very slow during the past few weeks, rain falling almost daily. Most of the grain has been cut, but there is still the bulk of it to house. ** On Sunday afternoon a special service for children was held at tthe church, conducted by the Rev. James PARK. **' The Rev. Canon MONNINGTON, the new Vicar of Broughton, has promised to preach the sermon at the annual Harvest Festival service at Woodland Church. ** At the special meeting for heating apparatus the sum of £1 6s 7d was taken. The sum required to make up the amount was £1 0s 3d. The balance therefore, will be used towards providing a cast iron rail for approach to heating apparatus. ** At a recent horticultural show, held at Coniston, Mr. Wm. DIXON took first for collection of fruit, and second for collection of vegetables. ** During the past week several shooting parties have been in the neighbourhood, and some fair bags have been secured. ****** |
