The famous Besses o' th' Barn Band, which is to visit West Cumberland next week, has not long ago completed a triumph d French Tour, The band visited Paris, Marseilles, Lyons, &c., and in each case played for the benefit of French charities. Previous to their departure they were commanded to appear before their Majesties, The King and Queen at Windsor Castle, and on their arrival in Paris played before the President of the French Republic. This band whose name is now world wide, has been established for over a century. The amount in prizes it has won is nearly £10,000, and in addition it has held the championship of the world, being successful in the National Brass Band Contest the year before last. The band will give an afternoon and evening concert in the Oddfellow's Hall, Whitehaven, on Tuesday next, and in the Athenaeum Hall, Maryport on Wednesday, Sept. 13th. ****** THE KIRK. A good audience was present at the happy Saturday gathering. Mr. WALLS presided, and a capital programme was provided by Mrs. COOPER, Mrs. MURRAY, Mr. WILLIAMSON, and Mr. WALKER. One total abstinence was pledge was taken. The Sunday services will be well remembered for some time to come. A large audience was present in the morning when Mr. W. H. WANDLESS discoursed on "Haman and Mordecai." It was indeed a feast of fat things. Those present had a happy time as they listened to the solemn warnings of the preacher, when he held up as an example the proud selfish, and envious spirit of Haman, and also showed how that punishment must sooner or later follow wrongdoing. As a contrast the character and disposition of Mordecai were pourtrayed, showing how that when self interest and human passioned was controlled such were the men whom kings and people delighted to humour. The Brass Band again rendered good service by parading the neighbouring streets. The Kirk was well filled for the evening service, when Mr. J. DRYDEN was the preacher. His subject was "Blind Bartimeus" and both preacher and people had a thoroughly good time. A most impressive influence prevailed throughout the service, and during the after meeting five adult persons professed conversion. ****** SUDDEN DEATH AT WHITEHAVEN. There was an awfully sudden death at Whitehaven on Thursday evening. It was at the surgery of Dr. I'ANSON. A patient, Mr. John MINNICAN, 58 years of age, for many years employed on the Furness Railway as a night foreman, had been off work since a fortnight last Monday with pleurisy. He got out again and was down to the market on Thursday, and about six o'clock was calling for some medicine at Dr. I'ANSON's. He knocked at the door, and when the door was opened he was found on his knees having collapsed. He was able to get up again very slowly and was got into the consulting room, and onto the couch. Dr. I'ANSON and his assistant were both on the premises and were in immediate attendance, but in a quarter of an hour life was extinct. Death had resulted from cardiac syncope, or heart failure. ****** |
