DALTON CATHOLICS AND THEIR NEIGHBORS:
           CHARITY TO NON-CATHOLICS.

The annual charity sermons in connection with the Dalton Catholic
Mission were preached on Sunday by Rev. Father SMITH, rector of Pemberton, Wigan.
In the morning he preached on the Good Samaritan, and in doing so he compared
the two laws, viz., the old law of fear and the new alliance, the law of love.
The great lesson was the university of charity.

Everything depended upon charity, and if they had not charity, they
could not save their souls, for faith worketh by charity. Sometimes they were
uncharitable to those who differed from them in race and politics. They must not
exclude from charity those who differed from them in religion. Very often he
found Catholics were wanting in charity towards their non-Catholic neighbours.
They seemed to think it was not their duty to minister to non-Catholics. But
it was. For many non-Catholics were languishing and famishing for the word of
God. He urged Catholics to put aside all prejudices concerning their
non-Catholic neighbours and to show them charity in all things. Christian charity was
born of generosity, liberality and self denial, and, in conclusion, he made a
strong appeal for the support of the Dalton Mission.
