A match for £1.10s a-side between John COWEN, of Low Hesket, and Thomas REAY, of Lazonby, to shear one rigg of corn, not less than 200 yards long, came off on Thursday last, in a field near Barrock Side, the property of Mr. William THOMLINSON. The riggs cut were each 309 yards long and 11 feet wide, and the task was performed by John COWEN in 2 hours and 45 minutes, beating his opponent by about two sheaves. Each rigg produced upwards of ten stooks, and both parties did their work exceedingly well. _______________________ Transcribed by: Ann Selchick on 01/11/2006 |
