THE POPERY TRIED AND FOUND WANTING.

A lecture on the above subject was delivered by Mr. M. O’CONNELL, in the lecture hall of the Atheneum, on Monday evening. The attendance was not numerous, a fact easily accounted for, inasmuch as the rain fell in torrents from seven to nine o’clock.

Mr. O’CONNELL, at the outset, said that in coming forward as he had done, he was not actuated by mercenary or party motives; his object was to serve true religion and the cause of truth. He then reviewed many of the chief errors of the Popish system, confining himself more particularly to the “sacrifice of the mass.” He examined with care the four passages of scripture upon which the Romanists rely as their authority for this sacrifice, and demonstrated clearly that their position was untenable.

He next took a glance at the entire system, showing its never changing character and the cringing conduct of it minions, and pointed out the palpable folly of the claim of the Romish Church to infallibility.

The lecturer concluded with an eloquent peroration, which at once exposed the horrors of Romanism and appealed to reason and Scripture in support of the blessings which an all - wise Creator had intended for His creatures. He was loudly applauded during the delivery of his address. It was intimated, at the close, that Mr. O’CONNELL would very likely deliver a second lecture on the same subject.
