SHORT NEWS ITEMS. WHITEHAVEN. Upwards of 400 Irishmen arrived at this port on Thursday morning, from Belfast, in the Queen steamer, and in the course of the day the chief part of them left the town in various directions to seek employment in the harvest field. WHITEHAVEN RACES.The Whitehaven Races are fixed to come off on the 25th and 26th proximo, and the prizes to be offered will be such as to ensure the attendance of a fair proportion of the best horses in the North of England. The wrestling department will not be overlooked, and there is every probability that though the last meeting was remarkably successful, the forthcoming one will be in every respect an improvement. The ground is in beautiful order, and no labour nor expense will be spared to render it unobjectionable at the time of the meeting. THE MOORS AND FORESTS.The sport is decidedly far superior to what has been anticipated. Blackgame shooting, which commenced on the 20th inst., is said to be good. The bags for the second week of the season are nothing behind the first week. |
